The Custodianship Standard

A sacred object is never
only an object.

Our working principles for receiving, understanding and responsibly relocating the material witnesses of faith.

I

Our identity

Identity

Custodia Sacra is an Italian initiative devoted to the responsible passage of relics, reliquaries, sacred art and devotional objects from one custodian to the next. We work with individuals, families, parishes, dioceses, religious communities, museums and other suitable institutions.

II

Our principles

Principles

Sacred character comes before commercial convenience. We approach every object with respect, discretion, continuity and responsibility, seeking a destination capable of honouring both its material integrity and its spiritual or historical meaning.

III

Our assessment

Assessment

Each proposal begins with photographs, dimensions and the account available to the current custodian. We consider condition, age, materials, inscriptions, seals, labels, associated documents and the circumstances of provenance. Where appropriate, specialist or ecclesiastical verification may be sought.

  • Physical condition and conservation needs
  • Materials, construction and approximate dating
  • Provenance, seals, labels and inscriptions
  • Existing ecclesiastical or specialist documentation
  • Appropriateness of potential destinations
IV

Our documentation

Documentation

We distinguish established facts from attribution, tradition and matters still requiring verification. Available records remain connected to the object wherever possible. Our aim is not to manufacture certainty, but to preserve evidence and describe it honestly.

V

Our relocation

Relocation

A suitable new custodian is considered in light of the object itself: its sacred nature, conservation needs, provenance, significance and intended use. The process is conducted privately, and no object is presented publicly merely because it has been submitted.

✦
“We preserve what can be known, acknowledge what remains uncertain, and seek continuity worthy of the object entrusted to us.”

Custodia Sacra

Frequently asked questions

Clarity before commitment.

Is Custodia Sacra an auction house?+

No. Custodia Sacra acts as a custodian and responsible intermediary. The aim is not simply to place an object on the market, but to identify an appropriate future context.

Do you accept objects from private families?+

Yes. We welcome confidential approaches from individuals and families as well as parishes, dioceses, religious communities and institutions.

Must an object already have complete documentation?+

No. Partial records, family history, old photographs, labels, inscriptions and seals can all be valuable. We clearly separate what is documented from what remains to be studied.

Does submitting an object commit me to transferring it?+

No. A submission begins a private assessment only. Any subsequent step is discussed and agreed separately.

Who may acquire an object?+

Potential custodians may include individuals, religious communities, parishes, dioceses, museums and institutions able to preserve the object responsibly.

Will submitted information be published?+

No. Submission information is stored for private review and is not automatically made public.
